POSITIVE CHANGE, POSITIVE LEADERSHIP

Melinda Sinclair, Member of the Adler International Learning Faculty. Architect and designer of the Adler Certificate Program (Adler´s Business Coachuddannelse)

The response from participants to the Adler Coaching Skills Program, ( i Danmark kaldet Coaching & Ledelse for positiv forandring), invariably tell us that the program does much more than provide participants with effective processes, tools and skills for coaching. The program opens participants up to the power of the positive when managing and leading others. Some specific "positive" elements in the program include:

For many participants, it is an eye-opener to see that these elements can be part of an effective management and leadership approach. For others, it is hugely affirming to hear that what they feel inclined to do actually has a solid basis, and they leave encouraged to “do even more” of what they’re already doing.

A growing body of research on individual and organizational flourishing shows how the positive contributes to organizational and business success. Research from the fields of Positive Psychology, Positive Organizational Scholarship, Appreciative Inquiry, Organizational Behaviour, and the Gallup organization’s research on workplace engagement, is converging to show the power of the positive at work.

What does this mean for us? It means that we can present the Adler Coaching Skills Program as a program that is in alignment with a growing body of research that shows the power of the positive at work – power that, as the Gallup’s research clearly shows, has positive implications for the business bottom-line. It means that we can look at our program as providing managers and leaders with a concrete way to put into practice new insights about what works best at work. And, it means that this body of work provides us with a rich source of ideas and insights to tap into as we continue to improve, enhance, and develop the Adler Coaching Skills Program.

If you want to read more: The Gallup Management Journal has many interesting articles that present highlights from their research on the power of the positive at work. Most of the articles require you to sign up (for a fee), but some articles are available for free. One of these is “The Impact of Positive Leadership. How seemingly small interactions can dramatically boost your team’s productivity”, by Tom Rath. Available Here.

The Power of Motivation

To be able to work and live and perform from the place of motivation, we need to be conscious about what it is that motivates us, what it is that fulfills us, what our values are, and to let this energy be the fuel that keeps our engine running at a high speed.

A lot of research has been done to find out what motivation is, what it is that motivates us as human beings, why it is important and how we can use motivation as leaders, as coaches, as teachers, consultants, parents.

An example of the exiting research that has been done in relation to the use of motivation in connection with coaching, has been done by Lars Meiner from the Copenhagen Business School. He has made his Ph.d. on the subject "Coaching - a method of creating motivation? The results are certainly very interesting for all professions that work with human development.
